Motorcycling in the News

Happy Christmas!

This article serves three purposes. To commemorate the birth of John Lennon, wish everyone a joyous holiday season and reflect on the past, and look at the future, of motorcycling.

John Lennon, thought by many to be the voice, or at least the conscience, of a generation, would have celebrated his 70th birthday on October 9th. I reference this to pay tribute to this cultural icon, not just to make you feel old (I could do that by telling you that Jimi Hendrix would be 68, January 8th would be the 76th birthday for Elvis or that JFK would be 93 years old).

With the December edition of "Hoosier Motorcyclist" magazine, I usually try to add some holiday flavor (or flayva for you hip cats) and hopefully the lyrics for Happy Christmas will accomplish that.

We always strive to remain true to our mission and pure to motorcycle issues in an effort to keep our membership focused on “what we’re about” (a common theme you’ll be seeing a lot in the following months). Comparisons, some humorous, some deep, to the words in Happy Christmas may help explain some of what’s going on in the motorcycling community.

Christmas 2010
So this is ChristmasWell, yeah, this is the December issue.
And what have you doneI’ll use this as a reminder that you should be actively involved in ABATE.
Another year overAmong other things, 2010 saw us amend the handlebar height law.
And a new one just begunThe General Assembly is about to go into session at the Statehouse.
And so this is ChristmasAgain, the obvious, with the holiday and all.
I hope you have funMotorcyclists’ rights is serious business, but we do have a lot of fun.
The near and the dear onePay attention to those close to you, family, friends and brotherhood.
The old and the youngPutt and Yacky are a couple of our oldest members, we need young members.
A very merry ChristmasAgain, with the holiday thing.
And a happy New Year A public service announcement to ride and drive unimpaired.
Let’s hope it’s a good oneLet’s have a successful 2011.
Without any fearSafe events, no fear of bad legislation, no controversy.
And so this is ChristmasAll right, enough already, we know it’s Christmas.
For weak and for strongWe must improve on our weaknesses and continue to build our strengths.
For rich and the poor ones As a 501(c)(3), rich people can deduct contributions to ABATE.
The world is so wrongThere are issues in the motorcycling world, just like anywhere else.
And so happy Christmas Finally, this is the last reference to Christmas.
For black and for whiteThis could be a calling to urban riders, or maybe a reference to cops.
For yellow and red ones I think this means Suzuki and Honda.
Let’s stop all the fightWe must all work together if we are to be successful.

No matter what, or how, you celebrate, enjoy this holiday season with friends and family. Stay focused and be ready to get to work in January as we’ll have plenty to do. Keep an eye on the website and sign up for the ABATE Alerts to stay informed.

Season’s Greetings, Ride Safe, Ride Free,

Jay Jackson
